Beautiful day honoring the life of Emma L. Grayson Miller, SFA Alum of the late 1800s in Chestertown, MD. Today the media center at H.H. Garnet Elementary School was dedicated in her honor and memory. Emma was a scholar at the Academy in the days of Mother Mary Lange. She took many of the lessons learned from Mother Lange and the Oblate Sisters of Providence into her work as Supervisor of Colored Schools in 1911. She rallied parents and community members to finance the construction of the school and to persuade officials that education beyond sixth grade should be made available to Kent County African American students. Special thanks to Chesapeake Heartland and Karen Somerville for this amazing work and project that features Saint Frances Academy and the Oblate Sisters of Providence! Stay tuned for the documentary.
