PANTHERS FALL TO MT. ST. JOE 61-51
January 22, 2008
The game was closer than the score indicates. At the end of the third quarter, the Panthers were down by two. Mt. St. Joe turned up the defense and never looked back. They made their free throws in the fourth quarter and won the game by ten. Last night they were the better team.
Our own “over-rated” Sean Mosley scored 21 points, had 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. Personally, I thought he needed to be more selfish in the fourth quarter and take the ball to the hoop instead of passing it off. What he did made sense in basketball terms….double teamed, pass to the open man….but our younger players weren’t ready to handle the passes and it caused turnovers.
Wayne Sparrow came up with double figures again with 11 scoring nine of those in the first quarter. Dante Holmes had seven and Greg Lewis six. We needed more scoring options last night when they closed on Sean, he needed help. He didn’t get it…….end of story.
Here’s an interesting point…….the last time that opposing fans taunted our star player (current assistant coach Mark Karcher) to the degree that I witnessed last night was at a Christmas tournament during the 1995-96 season. Then the school was Gonzaga (DC). Last night some Mt. St. Joe fans showed no class in their taunts of Sean Mosley. We heard the same tired phrase……"over-rated." Can’t these bright young men of Mt. St. Joseph come up with something more original than "over-rated" and "how old are you?"……don’t they watch the Cameron Crazies…. What happened in 1995-96? SFA went to the Alhambra and defeated Gonzaga in the semi-finals and won the tournament. (St. Frances is the most recent BCL team to win the Alhambra.) Will history repeat itself? I credit the St. Frances fans and team for their non-responsiveness and cool heads throughout the taunting. There was just too much testosterone in one section of the stands!!!!!!!
