PANTHERS DEFEAT CALVERT HALL AS COACH WELLS SNARES VICTORY 500
January 6th, 2008

There weren’t as many people at the game as on Friday night, but those of us who were there savored the moment!  We only had to wait a day and the Panthers snatched a victory from the hands of defeat.  It was a close game…..too close…..and we were down by two to begin the fourth quarter.  I heard Assistant Coach Mark Karcher yell to Sean, “we need a basket, Sean.”  Just like in the old days when Mark was the go to guy, Sean heard the message scoring seven points in the final quarter, five of six from the free throw line.  Besides scoring 19 points and adding seven rebounds, Sean dished out four assists and made three steals.

Anthony “New York” Oquendo was right behind him hitting big basket after big basket for a total of 15 points and five rebounds.  He was there when they doubled Sean and made them pay.  The Senior leadership showed up and they “refused to let us lose.”  I think they wanted the 500th win so the pressure would be off.

Dante Holmes had a good all around game also with seven points, six rebounds and seven steals.  Once again Greg Lewis was on the bench with an ankle injury and we could have used him against Calvert Hall’s big center.

There is always a controversy though as the Sun sportswriter questioned the number of wins Coach Wells had and contacted Athletic Director, Jerome Shelton during the game………..as it turns out, Coach Wells has 500 victories in the Catholic League….two years as JV coach and the rest as the varsity coach.  Am I being too cynical if I wonder whether they would have questioned some of the other head coaches in the Catholic League who are Coach Wells peers? Hmmmmmmmmm…..
