ScienceIntroduction to Science Grade 9 2 Semesters This course addresses the major areas of science, which includes but is not limited to: biology, chemistry, physics, and general science. The course covers topics related to science such as the scientific method, data collection, and data analysis. A major part of this course deals with the completion of a science fair project. Biology Biology is the study of life. This course will cover the scientific method, subatomic structure, cells and their components, genetics, evolution, and human anatomy. Participation in the Saint Frances Academy Science Fair is mandatory. Forensic Science The scientific concepts and methods involved in solving crimes will be covered. Topics include inductive/deductive reasoning, trace evidence (hair, paint, tool marks), glass fracture, DNA, fingerprints, impression evidence, blood, etc. The format involves lecture, case studies, labs, tests, and quarterly projects. Participation in the saint Frances Academy Science Fair is mandatory. Chemistry PREREQUISITE: Algebra II Concurrently or Department Approval This is an in-depth study of the theories of fundamental chemical principles demonstrated with laboratory experiments. Topics include atomic theory and structure, gas laws, chemical kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, and periodicity of elements
PREREQUISITE: Pre-Calculus and Department Approval This course is a study of the principles of Newtonian motion by way of mathematical analysis and problem solving. Topics include linear motion, vectors, forces, non-linear motion, work, and energy. Auxiliary topics to be presented in less detail include wave motion, sound, light, electromagnetism and thermodynamics. Freshman Biology PREREQUISITE: Placement by the Principal The intent of this course is to develop an understanding of all major fundamental principles of the biological sciences and to develop critical thinking skills through scientific inquiry, experimentation, observation, and analysis. Meteorology PREREQUISITE: Biology This course is designed for students who have interest in meteorology and the weather. The course will cover, climate, weather patterns, weather systems map reading and the understanding of all the facets of meteorology. This course also includes the use of the Weather Bug System, which is a collection of data from our school’s weather station.
