Mathematics

Algebra I
Grade 9
2 Semesters

PREREQUISITE:              Placement by Principal

This course reviews and reinforces general math skills including the order of operations.  Students will learn linear functions and their graphs, solving linear equations and inequalities and their systems, as well as proportional reasoning.  In addition, students will learn factoring, quadratic equations and their graphs, exponents and exponential functions, radicals and radical functions.  This course is designed for freshmen who are capable of working at a fast pace.

Geometry
Grade 10 and 11
2 Semesters

PREREQUISITE:              Algebra I or Algebra 1B

This is a course in Euclidean Geometry which will cover measurement; congruence; perpendicular, parallel, and symmetric objects.  Students will learn formulas and theorems as they relate to plane figures, such as polygons, circles, and ellipses, as well as three-dimensional figures like rectangular solids, cubes, cones, and spheres.  Student will develop problem solving skills and the use of deductive reasoning.

Algebra II
Grade 10, 11, and 12
2 Semesters

PREREQUISITE:              Algebra I or Geometry

The goal of this course is to provide in-depth knowledge of Algebra and an understanding of complex algebraic equations and functions.  Students will learn to represent data in linear equations; properties of exponents; solutions to linear, quadratic and exponential equations by different methods; and solution of inequalities.  They will also learn exponential functions, logarithms, and will be able to identify the six trigonometric functions.

Pre-Calculus
Grade 11 and 12
2 Semesters

PREREQUISITE:              Algebra II and Department Approval

This course will review concepts learned in Algebra II.  It will provide a foundation for Calculus and enhance problem-solving skills.  The student will learn how to solve equations by algebraic and graphical methods.  A key focus will be on various types of functions and their graphs.  The student will also learn trigonometric functions, identities, and how to solve trigonometric equations.

Calculus
Grade 12
2 Semesters

PREREQUISITE:              Pre-Calculus

This is a first level course in Calculus and analytic Geometry.  Topics include: rates of change of functions; differentiation of algebraic functions with applications; analytic geometry of the conic sections; and an introduction to integration.  This course will help students taking college-level Calculus the following year.

SAT Math Preparation
Grade 10 an 11
2 Semesters

PREREQUISITE:              Algebra I or Algebra IB

This course focuses on the math portion of the SAT.  The students will gain an understanding of the SAT format and its use by institutions.  Students will strengthen their mathematical and critical reasoning skills, including strategies for optimized guessing where specific skills fall short.

Algebra IA
Grade 9
2 Semesters

This course reviews and reinforces general math skills including the order of operations.  Students will learn linear functions and their graphs, solving linear equations, and proportional reasoning.  The first five chapters of the Algebra I textbook are covered.

Algebra IB
Grade 10
2 Semesters

PREREQUISITE:              Algebra IA

This course reviews material covered in Algebra IA.  Students will also learn systems and linear inequalities, factoring, quadratic equations and their graphs, exponents and exponential functions, radicals and radical functions.  This course covers Chapters six through twelve of the Algebra I textbook.
