The 1st [inaugural] Elrod Hendricks Spring Invitational Baseball Tournament scheduled for March 23-24, 2007, [extended to March 31 because of inclement weather], was highlighted by stellar pitching performances and adjustments. The tournament [named after the beloved Orioles, great], hosted by the Saint Frances Academy, is a four team format, with each team playing two games, with consolation and championship games.
On March 23, the first round of the tournament, Arlington Baptist beat Carroll Christian 2-0 and Towson Catholic beat SFA 7-0 on a strong pitching performance by Ferno [two hits, 14 strike outs]. Towson Catholic opted out of the tournament because of personnel issues. Resultantly, Carroll Christian and Saint Frances were pitted against each other, in a play-off game, March 31, 12:00 p.m., for the rights to play Arlington Baptist at 3:00 p.m., at Druid Hill Park, Field #1.
In a hard fought game, SFA beat Carroll Christian, 4-1, on a complete game win performance by Darrell Anderson. Anderson gave up one run, and 5 hits, while striking out 5. The Panthers’ hit attack was led by Jabre Jennings, who went 2 for 2, stole two bases, and scored two runs. Jamal Brunson and Anderson had doubles.
The championship game was dictated by solid pitching performances from both teams. Hilton of the Eagles struck out 14 Panthers in his six innings of work. However, a super performance, by Devin Hill, with Darrell Anderson [2] and Nathaniel Kosh [5] as battery mates, held off the Eagles for a complete game 6-4 win. Hill struck out 20 batters, in seven innings. The Panthers’ hit attack was led by Jamal Brunson, who went two for three [with a double], and two RBI. Anderson and Hill had two hits each.
Tournament trophies were presented to respective teams. Tournament MVP went to Darrell Anderson who batted .555 [5 for 9], and pitched in two games [two shut out innings against TC, and a complete game, 4-1, win against Carroll Christian]. |
