Academic Support Services

Academic Support Services:
A college preparatory program designed for the success of young men and women with learning differences.

INTRODUCTION

The Academic Support Services is an inclusion model designed for student success in a college preparatory program. At St. Frances Academy young men and women with documented disabilities are integrated into our high school curriculum and activities. The cornerstone of our model is the educational support of our study skills class, which includes organizational skills, reading/writing remediation and support in the content areas.  The goal of the academic support program is to teach student self-advocacy, an understanding of strengths and weaknesses, and the ability to communicate specific learning needs to faculty and staff in order to experience academic success and obtain a high school diploma.

The Academic Support Services involve the use of an inclusion model that integrates students and staff at every level.  Beginning the 2007-2008 school year we have established a Resource Team, which consists of Sister Marcia Hall (principal), Kenya Brown (director of counseling), Alyson Bloom (resource specialist), and Dr. Stan Cosby (psychologist).

We work collaboratively to collect information and data from all perspectives and meet once a week to discuss students of concern.  As a result of our collaboration we create plans for individual students with academic needs.  We then provide an individual accommodation form, extensive monitoring of progress in the content areas, and individual academic support.  We provide all of this as part of our philosophy, which embraces accepting students with diverse learning needs.

THE ACADEMIC SUPPORT SERVICES OFFER:

  • Informal and formal testing
  • Individualized Student Accommodation Plan
  • Study Skills
  • Test Accommodations
  • Classroom Accommodations
  • A learning center equipped with computers and resource materials
  • Collaboration and communication with parents to achieve success
